breathwork

My Breathwork videos are companion pieces to the prints in my Still Life series. Together, these series visualize psychological processes of change, growth, concealment, and reemergence. In my Breathwork videos, I digitally manipulate a wallpaper-esque pattern of repeated floral imagery. Sourced from scans of 17th-century Dutch still life paintings, the flowers swell, bloat, spin, and retreat into and out of oblivion. (These patterns also serve as the backgrounds in my Still Life prints.)

The symbolism presented in the Dutch flower paintings—measure of value, depictions of the fleeting quality of life, etc—takes a backseat to the transformation of the images in my videos. Instead, the ripples of interference that emerge throughout the videos take precedence over the images themselves. Manipulation, rather than what is being manipulated, becomes the subject.
