MEmentos

Silhouetted floral forms similar to what appear in my Still Life series take precedence within my Memento series of small watercolor paintings and large cut paper pieces. I digitally trace the contours of shapes found within 17th-century Dutch flower paintings and work from those digital drawings to either draw or cut shapes out of paper. I group these selected shapes to compose a reimagined still life image in which floral shapes emerge in fragments as if they are either breaking apart or coming together. Disassociated from contextual cues, the forms in these works often operate as something akin to a figure, particularly in the cut paper pieces which utilize mirror paper and literally reflect the viewer within the work. In the smaller watercolor pieces, the forms stray further from their floral source imagery, emerging from the negative space of the paper like islands floating within the sea.
